Attack on Minhaj ul Quran Secretariat
Saturday, June 21, 2014 - If the SP incharge of operation against Minhaj ul Quran Secretariat brought along characters like Gullu Butt - whose performance people saw on the television - and embraced and patted him for a job well done. It is not very difficult to imagine how he would have organized and conducted the rest of the operation. And then we have PML-N’s clowns, who try to make up for the lack of performance in their Ministries by launching verbal assaults, bordering on nonsense, trying to justify government’s misdeeds and hitting hard at those who criticize government’s conduct claiming, among other things, that the police reacts only when attacked. I would say that this could be true for the British police, which is under strict orders to react only if attacked and even then, not to use excessive force. The action taken by the Chief Minister - making the SP concerned an Officer on Special Duty - is too little and sounds more like an attempt to pacify public anger temporarily, with the possibility of reinstatement to the former position or even to a more lucrative and prominent one, as a reward for his loyalty, after the dust has settled. It is inconceivable that in a Province where the Chief Minister keeps everything under his thumb, and takes notice of even relatively less severe incidents, the Police would have taken the action that they took without seeking clearance from higher ups. Even Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s statement whereby he warned that “no one would be allowed to put the internal security and peace of the country at stake, and that no one could disrupt the law and order situation of the country” gives an indication that perhaps, as a matter of policy, a decision had been taken at government level to use overwhelming force to deter people from resorting to protests in future. This is nothing but sheer callousness and extreme stupidity which will only serve to make things worse in the future.
