PAT Expresses Condolences Over Loss of Life Due to Rains and Floods
Dealing with Natural Disasters is Challenging, but Reducing Losses is the State's Responsibility: Secretary General of Awami Tehreek
Floods Have Affected Agricultural Lands, Properties, and Human Lives; Urgent Action Should Be Taken: Khurram Nawaz Gandapur
The Secretary General of Pakistan Awami Tehreek, Khurram Nawaz Gandapur, expressed deep sorrow and regret over the loss of precious human lives, destruction of crops, and damage to homes caused by the recent rains and floods. He stated that natural disasters cannot be prevented, but through timely planning, an early warning system, and a coordinated relief system, the damages can certainly be minimized.
Khurram Nawaz Gandapur emphasized that the damage caused to humans, livestock, and the agriculture sector leads to devastating economic conditions for farmers, affecting the entire agricultural industry. He called for an immediate increase in rescue and relief operations in the affected areas and urged that all provincial and district machinery be mobilized. He pointed out that the monsoon rains are a regular occurrence every year, but unfortunately, no coordinated, long-term, and effective strategy is adopted to tackle them. There is no effective drainage system in place, and people in low-lying areas are not relocated to safe places in a timely manner. In some areas, there are no water pumps, boats, or rescue teams available, which represents a serious administrative failure.
The PAT leader further added that the Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted more rain, stormy winds, and potential floods in the coming days, and in light of this, state institutions must immediately become alert and take emergency measures. He also mentioned that in various cities of Punjab, including Lahore, pits have been dug for sewage and pipe laying. These should have been completed before the monsoon season, as these open pits could lead to major accidents.
