Working Class is the Backbone of the National Economy – Khurram Nawaz Gandapur
On the occasion of International Labour Day, Secretary General of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), Khurram Nawaz Gandapur, paid tribute to the working class, stating that laborers are the backbone of the national economy. He emphasized that developed nations always ensure dignity, protection, and equal rights for their workers.
He called on the government to increase the minimum wage and provide workers with social security, healthcare, and educational facilities so they can lead dignified lives. He noted that the progress of any country or society is directly tied to its labor force— the more content and secure the workers, the more prosperous the nation.
Khurram Nawaz Gandapur highlighted that Islam presents a charter of rights for weaker segments of society, with laborers at the forefront. In Islam, the laborer is called a friend of Allah, manual laborers are regarded as the best among people, and their earnings are described as the best form of wealth. Treating workers with kindness is both a divine command and a reflection of human dignity.
He remarked that the definition of a laborer has evolved—any low-income individual today can be considered a laborer. While states may not always be able to match the pace of inflation with adequate benefits, the best ways to support laborers include providing their children with quality education, access to healthcare, protection from artificial inflation, and ensuring the safety of their life, property, and employment.
He emphasized that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was a staunch supporter and protector of laborers. His conduct towards them was always marked by justice, kindness, and compassion. The Prophet ﷺ taught that one should desire for their workers what they desire for themselves and instructed to pay the laborer before their sweat dries—this is the true embodiment of human dignity.
Khurram Nawaz Gandapur further stated that when the relationship between employer and employee is based on justice and fairness, blessings will follow, and such institutions will flourish. He pointed out that the 21st century is an era of technological advancement and revolution, and every sector—including industry and agriculture—can benefit by equipping its workforce with modern technology, thereby increasing their income and improving their quality of life.
He stressed the need for both state-level and individual-level efforts to train the labor force, as skilled workers are not only essential for Pakistan but are in demand globally. The stronger and more prosperous the laborer, the more robust and resilient the economy will be. According to Islamic teachings, wealth earned through honest labor is the best form of wealth, while resources amassed through exploitation are the worst.
